Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'

Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' (Palmatum Group) is a form of Atropurpureum which has deep red-purple leaves throughout the growing seasons of spring and summer. The leaves are deeply cut into lobes which are slender and pointed. Most leaves have five main lobes and two other small lobes. Small purple flowers are followed by red fruits. In autumn the leaves turn scarlet red.

Acer palmatum 'Eddisbury'.

This is one of our coral bark maples which we think is lovely cultivar. It came with the label: Acer palmatum 'Senkaki Eddisbury'. However we believe that 'Eddisbury' is a cultivar in its own right and therefore it should simply have the name : Acer palmatum 'Eddisbury'. Itis similar to Senkaki/Sango-kaku but does not grow as large. The winter stems are coloured more deeply red than 'Senkaki', and scarlet would be a more accurate description! The spring foliage is bronze - green. In summer the leaves turn gold with red margins and in autumn the leaves are red, orange and golden

Acer palmatum 'Sagara nishiki'

 Acer palmatum 'Sagara nishiki' Variegated Japanese Maple Acer palmatum 'Arakawa' changes to scarlet red in autumn. 

'Beni-komachi'

'Beni-komachi' is a dwarf, densely branched, deciduous small tree or shrub with deeply divided, curled leaves that are red in spring, bluish red in summer and turn red in the autumn. 

Acer palmatum "Orange Dream"

We have several of this variety since they give a lovely bright splash of colour from spring to autumn. 

The acer "Orange Dream" looks like this in early spring when the juvenile leaves emerge yellow with bright orange margins and tips. Any late new growth in summer is also yellow and orange. However, by mid summer most of the leaves have gained their full palmate shape and have become yellow-green in colour. 

The acer is cold hardy but the foliage is relatively fragile. The summer leaves prefer dappled shade and morning sun rather than full midday sun since they have a tendency to scorch in strong sunlight. Nevertheless, we have planted some of our 'Orange dream' in full sun since during most UK summers scorching sun is a relative rarity! It is only occasionally that we have unsightly sun scorched leaves which we then pick off in a miniature pruning session. 

Autumn color is bright gold. 'Orange dream' grows relatively slowly however, towards the end of each winter, like most of our Japanese acers, we prune off the new growth of the previous year in order to keep them to the form and size of our choice.

Acer palmatum 'Kinshi' 

Acer palmatum 'Kinshi' is a slow-growing upright deciduous tree with green long, fine, narrow, lobed leaves giving the foliage a fluffy and light appearance. The leaves turn bright yellow-orange in autumn. Ultimately it could reach a height of 4m however ours which is planted in partial shade is around 3m after more than 20 years. The Japanese name means "with golden threads."" 

Acer 'Beni Maiko'

Acer 'Beni Maiko' produces bright, fire-red leaves in early spring. As they mature the leaves appear thin in texture and fade to pinkish-red with green undertones. During the summer the leaves become greenish-red with the main veins remaining red. In autumn the leaves turn a deep pinkish-red which spreads to the centre of the leaf until the whole leaf lights up. 

'Beni Maiko' grows 4-6 feet in 10 years. Mature plants are not expected to exceed 8 feet.  The deciduous leaves are not large, only about 5 cm across, but their emerging colour in the spring is striking and is even more enhanced when new leaves mature in early summer. Beni Maiko forms naturally a dense and bushy shrub with a neat, oval-shaped or almost rounded habit.

The irregular leaf shape of 'Beni Maiko' adds to this beautiful tree. In Japan it is considered more brilliant than most all the maples. The name 'Beni Maiko' means "Red Haired Dancing Girl."
